The 2024 Paris Olympics was a whirlwind of athletic feats, heartwarming stories, and unexpected viral sensations. From displays of sportsmanship to jaw-dropping moments, these ten highlights were my personal favorites that captured the world’s attention.

Yusuf Dikec, a Turkish pistol shooter, became an unexpected internet sensation during the 2024 Paris Olympics.

His laid-back demeanour, which included shooting with one hand in his pocket and wearing casual attire, contrasted sharply with the intense focus typically associated with elite athletes.

Despite his nonchalant appearance, Dikec is a seasoned competitor, having participated in every Summer Olympics since 2008. He and his partner, Sevval Ilayda Tarhan, made history by winning Turkey’s first-ever Olympic medal in shooting, a silver in the mixed team 10-meter air pistol event.

Gabriel Medina’s iconic mid-air photo from the 2024 Paris Olympics redefined what it means to capture a moment in time.

The image, taken by photographer Jerome Brouillet, appeared to defy gravity as Medina seemed to float effortlessly above the water, his surfboard hovering behind him.

The photograph went viral almost instantly, amassing millions of likes and shares across social media platforms. It was a perfect storm of athlete, skill, timing, and photography that created an image that will be remembered for years to come.

The photo was taken at Teahupo’o, a renowned surfing spot known for its powerful waves. Medina’s extraordinary performance, coupled with the photographer’s talent, resulted in a picture that captured the essence of surfing’s raw power and beauty.

Chinese gymnast Zhou Yaqin’s “relatable” reaction on the Olympic podium has also gone viral. After securing a silver medal in the women’s gymnastics balance beam final on August 5, the 18-year-old, competing in her first Olympics, became an instant online sensation.

Cameras caught Zhou’s adorable surprise as she watched her fellow medalists, Alice D’Amato, 21, and Manila Esposito, 17, take the customary bites of their medals. Zhou’s eyes widened in shock, clearly taken aback by the tradition. She then gave it a try herself, mimicking the gesture without actually biting into the medal, capturing hearts with her endearing reaction.

4. Imane Khelif – Algerian Boxer’s Gender Controversy

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif made history at the Paris Olympics by winning the gold medal in the women’s 66kg category. Her victory came amidst a firestorm of controversy regarding gender eligibility. Both Khelif and another boxer were disqualified from the previous year’s World Championships for failing gender tests, sparking heated debate.

Despite the controversy, Khelif remained steadfast in her journey. Her opponent in the Olympic match abruptly withdrew after taking a powerful punch, further fueling the debate. The Algerian boxer has denied any wrongdoing and has filed a legal complaint against online harassment targeting her.

Khelif’s victory is a testament to her athletic prowess and determination, but it also highlights the complex issue of gender in sports and the challenges faced by athletes in the spotlight.

5. Rachael Gunn – The Zero-Point Breakdancer

Rachael Gunn, also known as Raygun, made headlines during the 2024 Paris Olympics when she became the first breakdancer to score zero points in an Olympic competition. The Australian representative, a university lecturer with a PhD in cultural studies, took a unique approach to the sport. Her performance was characterized by unconventional and original moves, a stark contrast to the high-energy, athletic style often associated with breakdancing.

Gunn’s performance sparked intense debate and criticism on social media, with many questioning the inclusion of breakdancing as an Olympic sport. However, there was also a wave of support for her courage and artistic expression. The breakdancing community rallied behind her, emphasizing the importance of originality and diversity in the sport.

While the results were disappointing for Gunn, her performance ignited a conversation about the nature of competition, artistic expression, and the evolving landscape of the Olympics.

6. He Bingjiao – A Heartfelt Gesture

Chinese badminton player He Bingjiao showcased remarkable sportsmanship at the Paris 2024 Olympics. After defeating her Spanish opponent, Carolina Marin, in the semifinals only to see Marin withdraw due to injury, He made a poignant gesture.

On the podium, as she received her silver medal, He was spotted wearing a Spanish pin. This heartfelt act was a tribute to Marin, acknowledging her opponent’s talent and expressing sympathy for her unfortunate injury. He’s action garnered widespread praise, highlighting the true spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie among athletes.

The incident has become a symbol of respect and empathy in the world of sports, transcending national boundaries.

7. The Iconic Shorts Man: Olympic Pool Rescuer

During the women’s 100m breaststroke preliminaries at the 2024 Paris Olympics, a rather unexpected hero emerged. A middle-aged man, sporting a pair of eye-catching shorts, became an instant internet sensation after he jumped into action to rescue a swimmer’s cap that had fallen into the pool.

The incident occurred just as the event was about to start. The swimmer, Emma Weber, had lost her cap, which was floating helplessly in the water. As cameras panned to the cap, the man, seemingly a spectator, leaped into the pool without hesitation. He swiftly retrieved the cap and handed it to poolside staff, preventing a potential delay to the competition.

The man’s quick thinking and daring act caught the attention of millions watching the event live. His bright shorts made him instantly recognizable, and he was quickly dubbed the “iconic shorts man” on social media. The incident added a touch of unexpected drama to the Olympics, and the man’s heroic deed has become a memorable moment of the Games.

8. Biles and Chiles Honor Andrade: A Bow of Respect

One of the most heartwarming moments of the 2024 Paris Olympics unfolded on the gymnastics podium. After securing silver and bronze medals in the women’s floor final, respectively, American gymnasts Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles performed a graceful bow to gold medalist Rebeca Andrade of Brazil.

This unexpected gesture of sportsmanship quickly captured the world’s attention. Biles later explained that the bow was a sign of respect for Andrade’s exceptional performance and a celebration of their shared accomplishments. The moment became a powerful symbol of camaraderie and mutual admiration among athletes, transcending competition.

The bow to Andrade further solidified Biles’ status as a role model, demonstrating that winning isn’t everything, and acknowledging the achievements of others is equally important.

9. Anthony Ammirati: The Unfortunate Viral Sensation

French pole vaulter Anthony Ammirati became an unexpected internet sensation during the 2024 Paris Olympics for a rather unfortunate reason. While attempting to clear a height, a video angle made it appear as if his body had caused the bar to fall. This unexpected moment quickly went viral, leading to widespread online discussion and memes.

Despite the embarrassing situation, Ammirati handled the incident with humor, even posting a TikTok video about it. While the unexpected fame might not have been what he desired, it certainly made him a memorable figure at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

10. Tyler Mislawchuk – A Gutsy Performance

Canadian triathlete Tyler Mislawchuk made headlines during the Paris Olympics for a reason no athlete ever wants to. Immediately after completing the swimming leg of the triathlon, he was seen violently vomiting on live television.

The incident sparked concerns about the water quality of the Seine River, where the swimming portion took place. Despite the grueling conditions, Mislawchuk managed to finish ninth in the race, demonstrating incredible resilience.

While the image was shocking, Mislawchuk later explained that the vomiting was likely due to the intense physical exertion and the amount of water ingested during the swim, rather than water quality issues.
